human-I-T’s mission is to connect low-income individuals and nonprofits to technology. This year we celebrated that mission by collaborating with the City of Los Angeles during Digital Inclusion Week. Partners Council President Herb J. Wesson (10th District), Justin Wesson (Legislative Deputy for Herb Wesson), and Council Member Gil Cedillo (1st District), and General Manager of ITA, Ted Ross proudly supported the event.
The City of Los Angeles and human-I-T have been working together to solve problems related to the digital divide for 2 years, as part of the OurCycle LA program.
On May 4th, LA This Week’s News Reporter Gil Reyes helped cover this unique partnership by talking about the additional Angelinos added to the growing recipients served by the program. Twenty-five (25) computers and hotspots were distributed with 3 free years of broadband internet access. The event was held at Menlo Family Apartments in Koreatown, Los Angeles.
Program Manager, Paulina Sanchez spoke about the impact of events like this in the Greater Los Angeles area:
“It was one of the most diverse events to date at human-I-T. It was great to see so many ethnicities participating in the OurCycle LA program, and bettering themselves by harnessing the power of technology.
human-I-T works with many low-income households and nonprofits that serve low-income families, however, places like Menlo Family Apartment are very unique because even though they are a transitional home, the KYCC includes after school programs, life skills training, financial literacy, mental health counseling, and treatment.
By providing a free computer and a free 3 year hotspot plan, these families will be able to find better opportunities outside the place that they are already in.”
Oscar Solano, Case Navigator (YS Unit) reiterated that since the event 5 out of the 25 families that received a desktop have requested their section 8 voucher and are looking for a place outside of Menlo.
human-I-T proudly serves low-income families, veterans in need, those with disabilities, schools and other non-profit organizations.
